Mount Isa Mine Tailings Dam Project

In December 2019, the Teneo team successfully completed the installation along the tailings dam wall at Mount Isa Mines, for Glencore. The  1.6km long, 1.5m high dam wall installation was not without its challenges, with the hot weather conditions raising the temperature of the liner to 85 degrees Celsius.

This was the first tailings dam on the Mount Isa Mines site that is lined with a geosynthetic clay layer and high-density polyethylene sheeting.

The project was completed on time, on budget and safely with zero harm.

  • Installation of geosynthetics consisted of 36,000m2 of GCL and 36,000m2 of HDPE
  • Excavation and backfilling of 2.8km of Anchor Trench progressively with the installation of geosynthetics
  • Entire tailings wall 36,000m2 was electrically spark tested to ensure there was no leakage
  • Installation of geosynthetic material along the west wall was delivered in 15 days
